To the untrained eye, the vinedresser looks like an attacker. He moves through the vineyard with sharp steel, hacking away huge sections of growth. Branches that look healthy, green, and vibrant are severed and thrown onto the burn pile. It looks violent. It looks like destruction.
In our spiritual lives, when God begins to remove things—relationships, opportunities, resources, or comfort—our immediate reaction is panic. We interpret the loss as anger. We assume we have messed up and are being punished. We mistake the shears for a sword.
But in viticulture, an unpruned vine is a useless vine. It spends all its energy producing wood and leaves, not fruit.
Jesus clarifies the intent of the steel in John 15:2:
"He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful."
The difference between punishment and pruning is intention. Punishment is payback for the past. Pruning is preparation for the future. The Vinedresser isn't cutting you because He hates you; He is cutting you because He values the harvest you are capable of producing.
Do not despise the shears. The cut is proof that He is expecting a return on His investment.
